Politics

Write-up by Antonio Marsocci

Politics is not just about elections. For senior executive and junior administrator alike, the workplace is full of politics. Folks deciding on what to say, how and when to say it and to whom. All with a distinct outcome in mind. Alliances are forged. Supporters are rallied. It is not just the management priorities in the company plan that choose which design gets the vote of confidence and which project is axed. But believe positive, “politics” may appear a dirty word but the abilities we’re talking about can be used for good as a well as bad. It’s all in how you play.

So what is office politics? Politics is the use of power towards a specific objective. Where that goal is to the benefit of the individual and the detriment of others, we tend to see it as devious, manipulating and negative. In addition, simply because we frequently see power as going hand-in-hand with position, we tend to see the far more senior people in the company as the ones who play politics.

Nevertheless, there are many other kinds of power than the type that resides in rank or position: there is understanding (what you know), network (who you know), encounter (length of service), physical (size, appearance) and individual (charisma) power. It is safe to say that we all have some power in one or far more of those categories. So if we all have power, it follows that we can all play office politics. But do we? Ask your self: have I ever delayed or withheld poor news from the boss? Have I ever passed on a piece of information in order to influence opinion? Have I ever utilized my connections to locate out something? The chances are, we’ve all played politics at some point or an additional.

However, abilities that you maybe utilized in these scenarios are not by themselves poor. In reality, when you break it down to skills, it already starts to sound a lot more neutral. Influencing others… negotiation techniques… communicating with the audience in mind…. these are all key management competences, necessary by any executive and often the topic of personal development and coaching.

The key question to ask is: on those occasions, what had been the intent and impact of our politicking? We will need to be aware of the reasons behind our actions and how those actions may possibly affect other people. We can develop our power by promotions, networking, gaining expertise, creating a reputation, and so on. We can recognize our company’s political arena by studying the key players and their agendas and how they align – or not – with the company agenda. But when we come to use our power, if it is purely for our own ends and profit then we will be seen as playing politics. If it also rewards the company and the individuals in it, then our efforts will be viewed as much more constructive.

Ultimately, regardless of whether you are observed as an ‘honest’ office politician or not becomes a matter of integrity. So think positive and play the game fairly.

Politics is an inherent human method which aims towards the higher great. Folks who are adept at playing the political game can effectively gain the support of the people and obtain positions of authority. The sad component of politics dwells on the way folks in power maneuver or manipulates others to retain or reach a level of authority. Even so, it does not mean that you cannot establish genuine friendship if you prefer a a lot more straight forward approach when dealing with individuals.

Given that politics is all about us, even in your office politics is an ever present reality. No matter how large or modest your office is, you  are constantly in a political scenario. The dynamics of politics in an office setting contain the ambition of your colleagues, managers, and superiors that all bounced together, which in turn create friction. The interactions of every little thing in everyone in your workplace composed the totality of the political scenario. You need to be conscious of this interaction and how to place yourself in their midst if you want to have a greater grasp of the situation. Individual relationship in a company setting has an effect when decision is produced. It is frequent to see people going out of their way just to befriend their managers or senior partners. It is by no means straightforward to negotiate the tight rope of interpersonal dealings and at the exact same time attempting to preserve a skilled distance. The great news is however difficult it is not impossible.  Job security, which a lot of men and women encounter in their career, is about performance, but also about politics. Totally focusing yourself on performance may isolate yourself from the rest, which can turn out to be unproductive if you are aiming the support of your colleagues for promotion. There ought to a healthy dose of engagement with your officemates as nicely as correct time to keep a distance from them to attain success in your career. It is constantly essential to preserve a positive attitude towards other people even though at the identical time keeping a skilled distance. A very good “politician” in the office should let his colleagues know he is fair, but can be ruthless to attain that fairness. You should be warm to everybody at all times. This does not mean that you need to be superficial.  Being warm does not mean you are fooling other people so you will gain their favor. However, there is nothing wrong with having the required awareness that political beings will often seek mutually advantageous cliques and secret pacts. It is just natural to seek assistance whenever you are in a tight scenario, no matter whether in political or company circles. Tight situations are best opportunities to measure true friendship. Those that stick with you even in scenarios that are not favorable for them can be your accurate friends, even though in a organization scenario, this rarely occurs.

The same is accurate in politics. People tend to stick to those with stable political parties or those with powerful political standing so be sure to filter them out. An outstanding example is during election times. Such events can test the loyalty of buddies, specially if their political survival is at stake.

We are all aware of the fast pace at which technology moves. During ones lifetime we can name several technological changes at different points in our lives. At least every five years, if not closer, there are very notable changes in technology which help us to keep our personal time lines in order. Technology is probably the third most referenced subject when trying to recall a time or an event; right after music and movies. How many times have you said, “The time that I did…. was when…. (technological reference)”, associating memories in your life with the technology of that same time? Many of us do. Just as it is easy to recall a song or movie you so enjoyed, it is just as easy to recall a change in technology.

Technology enables and actually even promotes changes in every aspect of our lives. Through the years technology has changed what and how we eat by way of the microwave, how and where we work by way of the internet, how we educate our children, how we appreciate music, how we are entertained, how much free time we have, and even how we keep in touch with friends and family. (You gotta love those social arenas like facebook!) Sometimes these changes can be quite difficult and even expensive to keep up with for those who even try. Either way, these changes have definitely been noticeable.

However, are we just as aware of the changes in politics throughout the years? Though the political game may not change as quickly as the pace of change in the technological game; there are definitely some notable changes in each one’s lifetime as far as the political area as well. Have you noticed any changes in the way politics are handled during your time? Changes in campaigning, fund raising and so forth? You don’t really have to look hard to find them. If you concern yourself with political history at all, I’m sure you could list a few.

Though many people notice the quick advance of technology throughout the years, many may not notice how technological advances have tied into changes in the way politics have been run. Much like every other area in life, technology has enabled or even promoted advances in politics too. The most noticeable changes occurred during our most recent Presidential campaign no doubt, Obama vs. McCain. Can you name some of the dramatic advances in campaigning during this time? There were many to choose from. The 2008 campaign year absolutely stepped up the political game and no doubt changed the way politics will be run forever. Still, I’m sure there will be more advances yet to come as technology continues to develop.

For a great article with more information on the tie of technology and politics, please read “Technology and It’s Political Impact”. This article is very interesting, informative, and enlightening.

Discover the Role Digital Photo Manipulation Has Played in the World of Politics and Art

One of the great advantages to photographers of digital photo manipulations, is the control over the work as subtle changes occur on the screen instantaneously. Bigger Than Technology
